TECA wishes to thank all the sponsors, partners, and attendees for making this event successful!

Date Posted: July 29, 2024

The Local Energy Efficiency Partnerships (LEEP) Residential Heat Pump workshop was hosted by TECA in Prince George, Kamloops, and Burnaby on June 4th, 6th, and 7th, 2024. The workshop was sponsored by BC Hydro and FortisBC in partnership with BCIT and HPSC. The training was delivered to over 100 people in the HVAC industry.

The workshop provided training on heat pump installations by examining a local home as a case study in a step-by-step process from analyzing the electrical panel to designing and sizing the heat pump equipment and the duct system. Each presentation was delivered by an industry expert which addressed code requirements and best practices. Below is a summary of the presentations and the speakers.

Sizing Hybrid Heat Pumps for Retrofit Applications

Presented by: Gilles Lesage, Total Home Solutions

Gilles Lesage discussed the use of CSA F280 for calculating the heat loss & heat gain of a building. He highlighted how accurate calculations assists with correctly sizing HVAC equipment, as oversizing heat pumps can cause cascading problems throughout the design process.

Electrical Service Impacts of Heat Pump Retrofits

Presented by: Gary Hamer, BC Hydro & Ben Guidici, Riverside Energy Systems

Gary Hamer and Ben Guidici discussed how design decisions can facilitate or even avoid an electrical service upgrade during a renovation. Careful electrical load analysis by a professional, as outlined in the CEC is a powerful tool. In some cases, a demonstrated load might be the right solution for avoiding an unnecessary electrical upgrade.

Mastering Control Systems for Optimal Heat Pump Performance

Presented by: Gilles Lesage, Total Home Solutions

Gilles Lesage discussed different control strategies for a dual fuel system and how the selection of a balance point impacts the performance and cost of a heating and cooling system. Understanding the economics and the priorities of a client are critical to making informed decisions on control schemes.

Air Source Heat Pump Sizing & Selection Tool

Presented by: Jérémie Leger, NRCan

NRCan has produced a free air source heat pump sizing & selection tool. Jérémie provides an introduction on how this powerful tool can be used to compare and select heat pumps for a specific project, providing better systems at more competitive process.

NRCan has made the air source heat pump selection tool free to the public, download the toolkit and the guide at this website.
