Principles of Moving Air

Review for the Principles of Moving Air (POMA) course

Date: March 30, 2025 Written by: Calistus Edioke From: Kamloops, British Columbia

As a Refrigeration Tech, Instructor and Contractor I’m often called out to trouble shoot problems with heat pump and A/C air handling systems. In 20+ years of experience I’ve found failure is typically:

  • 90% low air flow
  • 5% control failure
  • 5% refrigeration circuit failure

TECA’s POMA Course has helped me diagnose the key contributors of low air flow. I now can confidently identify and often correct the prime underlying causes: Undersized duct, Air flow restrictive fittings and Undersized and/or Inappropriately placed filters.

The instructor really knows his stuff. Unfortunately, it was a lot of math related material presented to a lots of not math related people much more quickly than they expected or needed.

The instructor's patience with people having technical difficulties was great. I feel more examples to work through would help greatly.

Very good at explaining the concepts and helping those students that needed a little extra. Well taught course, just one suggestion is to have more written examples and practice questions, which would be helpful for the test.

Eddie was a great and knowledgeable teacher. He took the effort to help us understand the subject being taught and organize the information into meaningful lesson plans. I would definitely attend another class from Eddie Calder.

Eddie was very organized and thoughtful in how he presented that material being taught. He tried to expand on what was being provided to help us understand that material. He listened to our questions and concerns about the course material. Tim who taught controls, went word from word by the book and was trying to teach a course more for service technicians rather than designers. It was hard to follow and understand.

I appreciated several aspects of this course. For example, I liked it when a course is well-structured, making complex topics feel more manageable. The information provided as a base course is excellent. Lots of good info about the air flow, ducting, etc.

I really liked the instructor Andrew. He was great at explaining things and I felt comfortable asking him questions. I am happy to do courses online through Zoom, its such a better use of time instead of commuting for hours. The text book was laid out well and the videos were helpful too.

Comprehensive coverage of a difficult topic. A great high level background for next level courses.
